This kitchen renovation in Albany Creek turned a cramped, dated kitchen into a bright, modern space the homeowners are proud to show off. Because the kitchen opens directly onto the living room, the old space was on display all day and was dragging down the look of the whole house. We rebuilt it with modern finishes, new appliances and a marble tile splashback, and carried new flooring through into the living room so both spaces now feel like one connected, updated part of the home.
Before: The Problem with the Old Kitchen
The old kitchen felt cramped and worked against the people using it. Bench space was limited, so the microwave, toaster, kettle and everyday items crowded the benchtops, and spare appliances ended up stored on top of the overhead cupboards. The white gas cooktop and oven were showing their age, and the small square splashback tiles and plain cabinet doors gave the room a tired, dated look.

Being open to the living room made these problems harder to ignore. The kitchen was visible from the main living area, so instead of adding to the home, it detracted from it. The homeowners wanted a kitchen that looked modern, worked better for cooking and suited an open living space they could enjoy sharing with guests.
Project Details: How We Transformed the Kitchen
A Layout With Room to Work
The new kitchen uses a U-shaped layout with a peninsula that extends out towards the living area. This adds a long stretch of uninterrupted bench space for prep and serving, which was the biggest frustration in the old kitchen. Deep drawers below the benchtops make pots, pans and larger items easier to reach, and a dedicated fridge space with a cupboard above keeps the run of cabinetry neat. An open nook in the overhead cabinetry beside the window gives everyday items a home off the bench.

New Appliances and a Cleaner Sink Area
The old gas cooktop and oven were replaced with a sleek black glass cooktop and a stainless steel built-in oven, placed together in the centre of the run so cooking happens in one zone. A stainless steel dishwasher sits beside the sink for easy clean up, and the sink itself was upgraded to a larger bowl with a gooseneck mixer positioned under the window, where it gets the best natural light in the room.
Shaker-Style Cabinetry and a Marble Tile Splashback
White shaker-style cabinetry with long brushed handles replaced the old flat doors, and the overhead cupboards now run up to a decorative cornice for a finished, built-in look. Behind the benchtops, a marble tile splashback adds soft veining and a touch of polish without making the kitchen feel busy. Paired with white benchtops, the result is a bright, classic kitchen that will hold its appeal for years.
New Flooring Through to the Living Room
To fix the disconnect between the kitchen and living area, we laid new herringbone flooring in a warm timber tone across both spaces. Running one floor through the open plan area ties the rooms together, so the kitchen now feels like a natural part of the living space instead of a separate, dated corner. Pairing a new kitchen with fresh flooring also combines two of the upgrades that add the most value during a home renovation, giving the homeowners a better home to live in and a stronger one to own.

The Result
The homeowners told us the renovation makes it feel like they are living in a completely new house. They now enjoy cooking in their kitchen, and with the space opening onto a refreshed living area, they take real pride in having people over.
